Why You Need Artists in Your Life

It often begins quietly, perhaps over coffee with Marnie Karmelita, our Artistic Director, in a Tasmanian café. An idea is shared, a challenge is set, and an artist is invited to create something new for Ten Days on the Island. From that first conversation, sometimes years pass before you see the finished work, we walk alongside artists as they develop and shape their vision. Our support does not end when the curtain falls. We continue to back artists as they tour their work, share Tasmanian stories, and reach new audiences beyond the festival.

This matters because artists help us see ourselves and each other in new ways. They create moments that bring people together, whether in local halls, on windswept foreshores, or in unexpected places across the island. As Marnie says:

“We meet people where they live… this festival belongs to everyone, everywhere. It is not just about art, it is about wellbeing, resilience, and hope.”

Supporting an artist is about more than applause on opening night. It is an investment in the creative confidence of our state. You help artists take risks, try new things, and create work that speaks to Tasmanian life. You also help create jobs, build skills, and keep our creative economy moving. Since 2001, Ten Days on the Island has generated over $340 million in economic impact for Tasmania. The real value, though, is seen in healthier, happier communities.

Our audiences tell us what this means. “It was so much fun. More, please!” wrote one festivalgoer. Another reflected, “I have seen and been part of powerful and transformative work. Social contacts are enhanced for regional communities.” When art appears on your street or in your local hall, it becomes part of family life, not just a special trip that happens elsewhere.

On Thursday, 23 October, Ten Days on the Island joins organisations nationwide for AusArt Day, a fundraising initiative on a single, powerful day, spotlighting the role of creativity in healthy, connected communities. So, why support artists? Because you are helping to keep Tasmania’s stories alive and evolving. You are making sure the next generation has something to aspire to, and that our communities stay connected, creative, and proud. Supporting artists is also a gift to yourself. It brings more beauty, surprise, and meaning into your own life.

Give what you can and help Tasmanian artists take their next step. All donors go into the draw for a signed print by Aldous Kelly, our 2025 festival artist. If you can give at lunchtime during our Power Hour (12–1pm AEDT), your gift will be matched and go further.
